It seems like we have commemorative weeks and days to celebrate all kinds of things. For example, May is national hamburger month, and this week was Women's Health Week...who knew? The Nanny Diaries: Tips for hiring a nanny or baby-sitter
by guest blogger Brooke Farmer
Recently, I had one of those lovely, unexpected moments where you really feel appreciated for what you do, completely reaffirming your commitment to your job. Going through the mail one evening I recognized the return address for a family that I used to nanny while I was in graduate school in Richmond, VA. Inside was an invitation to the high school graduation for Wes, the young man I had taken care of from the age of nine to eleven. There was also a note from his mom saying that he had specifically asked that I be invited because he knew I would be proud of him for reaching this milestone. Read More

Capturing the Moment
sponsored blog by Kristen Bagwell
I caught myself the other day watching my daughter from our front porch. The sun was setting over the top of the house, and she was in the sunny patch in the yard that would soon disappear. As ever, she was running...my tiny baby girl - who was born just yesterday, it seems - was racing at top speed across the yard, sunlight pouring over her, yelling for the dog to follow as she flew through the yard. I had several thoughts all at once: Read More

All Aboard the Gluten-Free Train (or is that a Space Ship?!)
by guest blogger Amber O'Neal

As always, when I sit down to write my thoughts are running through my head faster than I can spit them out. In this case my thoughts are consumed with Gluten. Yummy, delicious gluten imbedded in everything we consume. You know, gluten: the protein found in the seeds of certain plants, notably in wheat, rye and barley, and in foods made from them. Now imagine changing direction completely. Suddenly gluten is a poison to your system, and for some it can be life threatening. Welcome to my my son’s new world! The land of Gluten-free. Read More
Happy Earth Day 2012!
by Kristen Bagwell

Did you know that this year marks the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day? From the Earth Day Network:
The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. Growing out of the first Earth Day, Earth Day Network (EDN) works with over 22,000 partners in 192 countries to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. Read More
Earth Day, Reusable Bags, and Cloth Diapers
by Heather Burns - mom, blogger, and owner of SmartMomma

As we come upon Earth Day 2012, I am reflecting on what I can do to contribute to a cleaner earth for me and generations to come. I admit, in the past I have not been the most conscientious re-user, recycler, conservator, etc... I use plastic bags when I go to the grocery store, my two school-aged boys were reared in disposable diapers when they were babies, I love air conditioning, and probably use it when I could just open the windows (although part of this is due to allergy season), and the list goes on. I do recycle, but mostly because the city of Raleigh requires me to do it, and they make it pretty easy for me. Read More

Family Heritage
by Kimberly Froeschner
I'm a total geneaology nut, and the 1940 Census is coming out. To me, this is like waiting for the next Harry Potter book/movie to come out...or for the next iPhone (depending on your mom mode). It's truly very exciting because for a lot of us, our grandparents and even some parents will be on this census. All of this excitement has made me think a lot more about family heritage and traditions lately. Read More

Pump It Up Announces New Adventure Parties!
by Kristen Bagwell
Remember the good old days when we played outside until the streetlights came on? We had to listen for our names being called to come home, not to our mobile phones. As our childrens' lives become more high-tech, their play becomes less imaginative. While electronic games can be good learning tools, they are mainly based on question and response, not on make-believe. How, then, can we make sure our kids continue to exercise their imaginations?
Pump It Up of Raleigh has the answer. Recognizing that make-believe play is a rarity for children in today’s digital world filled with high-tech toys and gaming systems, Pump It Up is reintroducing families to the benefits of using their imaginations. Today, the indoor inflatable playground is announcing an entirely new line of “Adventure Parties” nationwide, where children go through Superhero or Pirate training camps to encourage imaginative play among children 3 to 7 years old. Inspiring Young Children to Learn and Love Music
By Beth Frack, Artist-in-Residence at Forsyth Country Day School
Several years ago, I taught music to a kindergarten student who was described by his classroom teachers and parents as unhappy, moody, contradictory and never excited about anything. That same year I gave him a solo in a school musical, and it was like watching a caterpillar turn into a butterfly. This child became confident and excited about everything. Suddenly, there was joy and happiness, and it spilled over into his classroom and home life in a very positive way. The teachers were amazed at thetransformation in this child, and they attributed the change to the joy that music brought into his life. Read More

The saddest day
by Kristen Bagwell
Someone once asked me what my greatest fear is, and my response was "loss." It did not make sense to my friend at the time, perhaps because we weren't parents yet. Now that I have kids, I cannot imagine anything worse than losing a child. I do believe that there is a divine plan, and in the "things happen for a reason" theory. With that said, I cannot fathom who decides that children should die - for any reason - or what is to be learned from that kind of tragedy.
This weekend, a teen was killed in a car accident in the neighborhood where I grew up. The fact that she attended my high school makes the news a bit more painful, somehow. How can her parents possibly be coping? What would I do if I were a parent in this situation, and how can I keep my children safe every single day forever? These are awful, difficult questions to consider. Read More

Let's teach our children to give
by Triad MoM guest blogger Parker White
adapted for the Triangle by Kristen Bagwell
As parents, we all want to raise thoughtful, well-rounded children. Yet, society tells us that what is important these days are looks, wealth and status. Are these the messages we want our children to learn? As a mother of two, I found what is most important to me is my child's character. I want to raise my children to be good people, to help those in need and realize how blessed they truly are. In a culture of more...more...more, I want my children to learn the phrase give...give...give. Read More

Personalized Holiday Gift Ideas for Moms and Dads

The holidays are just around the corner, and if you're like me, most of the moms and dads on your list either seem to have everything, or say they don't want/need anything this year. (Not helpful!) Fortunately, Rachel has done all the work for us! Triad Moms on Main was actually featured on Fox 8 Morning News in Winston Salem earlier this week, sharing the very ideas you'll read about below. Big thank you to Rachel and the Triad MoM team! (Some of the stores noted are local to Winston Salem, but all of the features have web links and online store options.) Enjoy! - Kristen
I've been on the hunt for unique gift ideas this season. I am always

I tried to collect a variety of price ranges for this list, so I hope these ideas will inspire you and help you fill in some ideas on your gift list! And keep checking back to both Moms on Main websites (Triad and Triangle) because we will have MORE gift ideas after the Thanksgiving Holiday! Read More

We Have a New Calendar of Events!
by Katie Moosbrugger
We have big news on our site today....we just published a new look to our calendar of events! You all tell us how much you appreciate TMoM's easy-to-use calendar of Triangle family-friendly events, and now it's even more user-friendly - especially for busy parents who like to plan ahead.
Here's how it works. When you click on our Events page, you will see our new calendar listed on the main page. With this new calendar format, there are three ways you can now view events: by week, by month, or by "agenda".
The "Agenda" view will probably be the format you use most often. Here you can quickly glance at events happening each day - and at the time in which they occur - without having to click on a specific date. If you want to narrow your view to events happening during one specific week, you would then click the "Week" view. Likewise, if you want to view the entire month at one time, click "Month" view. You are also able to print the events in a nice "printable" form too. Read More

When Your Son Looks in the Mirror, Does He Like What He Sees?
by Takashi Hirata, M.D., Medical Associates of Davie at Hillsdale and Forsyth Medical Center
When someone says "body image," most of us probably think of a teenage girl looking in the mirror and not liking what she sees. The word "anorexia" may then come to mind. But body image doesn't have as much of a gender divide as you might think. Boys feel the pressure to look good, too, and the feeling that they don't quite measure up to their peers or celebrities can take a big toll in the form of depression, eating disorders and other problems.
As a primary care physician with primary focus on adolescents, I see the effects of negative body image among girls much more often than in boys. In fact, girls and young women account for the majority of eating disorders. But the 10-15 percent represented by boys and young men should still give us pause. It says that boys are getting the same message that girls are: You're not ok as you are. Read More

Motherhood, Pregnancy, and the Future
by guest blogger Heather Burns

Hello fellow moms and moms-to-be. I haven’t blogged in a while, but I’ve been so busy running a store and being pregnant, I have forgotten to write. So just wanted to share some late night thoughts and reflections about life, motherhood, and just being present.
So for those that don’t know, I have two boys, just turned 5 and 8. Seems crazy to think I have an eight-year old. I remember moving into this neighborhood when I was pregnant with Dillon. The neighbors had children from 3 to 9, and I remember thinking how far apart we were in life. Now I realize we were not so far apart at all. After having children, your life speeds up exponentially. Is it because you are busier, and thus time flies? Or is it because you are older? I think the former is true. Read More
Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept...

At the end of a charitable work-week in a foreign country, what are you left with? We first mentioned a friend of mine who is currently on a mission last week, and today is a follow-up to that blog post. It's been so interesting to follow her online updates, and to try and imagine all of the experiences, emotions, and fulfillment that comes with a trip like this. I'm so happy and proud of my girlfriend for heading out on this challenge, and hope to do the same someday.
Below are some excerpts from her daily notes - these paint a picture of what the week was like, in her own words. Read More
Woman on a Mission
by Kristen Bagwell

Have you ever considered going on a mission trip, or traveling to a community less fortunate? I have several friends who have done this in the past two years: one to Africa, one to Jamaica, one to Haiti, and one to Belize. Most recently - in fact, right this minute - one of my long-time friends is in Nepal working with Habitat for Humanity to build sustainable housing from bamboo.
Although it can be difficult to find "the right time" for a trip like this, it's absolutely amazing to consider, much less go and do. I am fascinated by the stories that my traveling friends have shared, and so I wanted to show a bit of what Amber is experiencing while she is away. After more than 24 hours of travel, her first experience was actually a 6.9-magnitude earthquake, which thankfully did not injure any of their traveling group. A rocky start seems to have led to smooth sailing, though. Here's a bit of background on how she came to choose Habitat and Nepal, and we'll follow up next week with some of her tales from the trip. The Benefits of Sports for Children
By Guest Blogger Heather Bjork
September – school starting back and the start of soccer and football season. Fans of both sports are passionate in their love of these games. One does not have to look very far to spot people wearing football or soccer apparel around the Triad. Sports are an important part of most people’s lives, and they are commonly discussed at home, with friends, in the workplace, in cyber space and through any form of media that we come in contact with on a daily basis. As such, it seems we would be doing our children a disservice to not expose them to different sports and give them an opportunity to experience playing different sports.
If you have not yet provided your child with the chance to get involved in a sport, think again. Even if you are not a “sports” person yourself, there are multiple benefits to allowing your child to play sports. Read More

Main Street Moms on the Move - August
by Kristen Bagwell
All moms deserve recognition just for being incredible people! Here at Triangle Moms On Main, we want to highlight local moms and give them the props they deserve. Meet these extraordinary women who are making a difference in the lives of their families, friends, strangers, and the community. They might be movers, shakers, entrepreneurs, athletes, volunteers, or caregivers, but most importantly … they are moms! Read More
Do You Sport a Momiform?
by Katie Moosbrugger

momiform (mom-a-form) n. the official or distinctive clothes or outfit worn by mothers, especially when on duty
Otherwise known as work-out clothes or the same pair of jeans and same style T-shirt day after day after day. Yep, that pretty much defines my wardrobe. Of course I have the occasional cute top for those special occasions, and I’m proud to be a part of the “fancy” jeans club after biting the bullet and buying a pair of good, designer jeans (a must-have for all women!). Earthquakes & Hurricanes & Storms - oh my!
by Kristen Bagwell

What in the world happened Tuesday? Completely oblivious to what was going on outside my office (as usual), my phone suddenly starts buzzing left and right with news and facebook status updates about an earthquake. What earthquake? Evidently we had neighbors in Rolesville, Zebulon, Chapel Hill, and other parts of the Triangle that reported definite earth-moving, tchotchke-rattling tremors yesterday. Thankfully, the epicenter was nowhere near here; it was actually northwest of Richmond. Still, we live on the east coast...who'd have thought? Read More
A Raw Deal - in the good way
by Kristen Bagwell

Have any of you tried a raw food diet? I have been mildly obsessed with this idea for a few months, but major dietary change is not generally encouraged mid-pregnancy, so I've been dabbling. It all started when I saw an ad somewhere (facebook?) about Dr. Oz and his "28-day raw challenge." Evidently, the raw food method of eating produces substantial weight loss for those who adopt the program, even temporarily...but maybe we should start with a definition.
According to www.webmd.com:
The fundamental principle behind raw foodism, also sometimes called rawism, is that plant foods in their most natural state – uncooked and unprocessed – are also the most wholesome for the body. WebMD goes on to emphasize that rawism is not a diet; it is a lifestyle choice. Most raw foodists spend a lot of time researching and experimenting with recipes, preparation methods, and resources. Raw "cooking" means that nothing can be heated above 115-118 degrees in order to preserve the food and its healthful enzymes in their natural state. Research does show that cooking does leach at least some portion of nutrients from foods, and that people who comsume large amounts of fresh foods tend to be at lower risk for certain types of cancers. But how to even get started? Read More
Cutting out the Chemicals
by guest blogger Jessica Sheedy
What Mom doesn’t want the best for her kids and family? We all strive to lead healthier lives, and recent news of dangerous chemicals and irritants in products we use every day has become more prominent. There is an overwhelming amount of information out there about what choices we should be making regarding cleaning products, food storage, and even personal care products like makeup and baby shampoos/soaps.
My sister was just recently diagnosed with breast cancer at age 32, which made me really think about a lot of things, but especially how my family lives and the future I want for my two boys, Evan (7) and Alex (5). To be clear, I am not the most ardent environmentalist by any means, but I do know that making these changes will have a positive affect on my family and our health. With innovation and popularity of convenience, we’ve lost a lot regarding personal safety and responsibility for our planet. Not sure where to start? Check out this list of small changes that can have a dramatic impact on your family’s health: Read More
Ways to Volunteer with your Whole Family
by Katie Moosbrugger and Kristen Bagwell
Summer is the perfect time of year to consider a volunteer project with your whole family. Not only can children learn valuable "working" skills and all about different organizations - as well as how these organizations fit within society - but kids also learn how to give back and be thankful for what they have. According to www.CompassionateKids.com, children who see their parents volunteering are much more likely to believe in the value of helping others. Plus, working alongside your kids is not only a great way to teach by example - it's also fun.
You don't have to look far to find a fun opportunity for your family. Below you'll find suggestions for kids by age, as well as links to some local organizations. Enjoy scoping out our list, and if we did not include a volunteer opportunity you know of, please add in the comments below. Read More
Day Trip Idea: Visit Burlington!
by Kristen Bagwell

Ever since the new Tanger Outlets opened, the Burlington area has become interesting to me again. That sounds awful, doesn't it? I actually lived in Burlington for a little while after college, and it has grown by leaps and bounds since then.
Just a short 40-45 minute trip from the Triangle, there are tons of things to do and see. It's been fun getting reacquainted with this unique group of small towns, and they are just up the road! We're on our way...it's the easiest trip ever. Hop on I-40 and head west, and keep an eye out starting around exit 150. That's where the fun begins! Read More
Day Trip Idea: NC Transportation Museum
by Katie Moosbrugger
When my two-year-old son saw a true-to-life Thomas the Tank Engine turn the corner, race towards him with a loud clackety-clack and let out an ear-piercing “Choo Choo,” I thought I might have mistakenly ended his innocent obsession with all those funny faced locomotives. Instead, it turned out to be one of the most magical moments for him. I honestly believe he thought we arrived on Sodor Island. And while he will never forget that surprise visit from Thomas, I will always cherish the priceless expression on his little face. Read More
Doing Hard Things
by Cara McLauchlan

When it comes to doing hard things, I'm a wimp.
Recently, I was invited to participate in a church mission project for homeless people. My first response was "no way." I'm the kind of person who would rather support from afar. This is a quality I am not very proud of, but it is the truth. It is much easier to donate things like ketchup, collect canned goods or give away blankets. But to actually look people in the eye as you hand them a meal is very different.
So when this project kept coming up over and over, I knew I needed to "man up." This was not a smiley decision, this was a "do it scared" sort of time. Read More
Day Trip Idea: Our Own Raleigh
by Kristen Bagwell

As I was looking back at our Day Trips series, it occurred to me - how many days do I spend running around our own Raleigh? I'll admit the running around is a bit different when you have kids in tow, so I have created the perfect Raleigh weekday in my mind (and on your screen). Now I just need to get in the car and go do it all in the same day! Read More
It's hot outside...and even hotter in the car
by , WakeMed Families First

If the outside temperature is 101 degrees, then inside a car
the temperature can reach a scorching 140 degrees. Exposure to this
high temperature for any length of time can cause serious, irreversible
brain injuries, multi-organ failure and even fatalities.
It may be hard to believe, but according to Safe Kids USA,
almost 50 children died because they were left in a hot car last year.
Unfortunately, our community is not immune. Each year our Children’s Emergency Department sees children who have been severely impacted by being left left in a hot car. Read More

Loved Twice: Baby clothes for babies in need!
by guest blogger Rachel Rankin

Alright moms, listen up. I'm serious this time. This is not about Bentley.
If you're anything like me, your baby's grandmother buys him or her so many clothes that it's not unlike the Oscars at your house with 7 wardrobe changes every day. I swear Benjamin has about five pairs of size 18 mo khaki shorts alone. Ridiculous. I'm so thankful.
But some babies are less fortunate. Read More
Live music, crafts, food & more: Festival on the Eno
by Kristen Bagwell

Did you know that 2011 marks the 32nd year of the Festival for the Eno in Durham? The Festival for the Eno is held annually at West Point on the Eno (Durham City Park) over 4th of July weekend. If you’ve never been, this is a ticketed event showcasing non-stop blues, rock, bluegrass, folk, old time, gospel and world music; and featuring the exhibition and sale of crafts by over 100 specially-selected artists.
The Festival is also quite educational for children and adults alike. Look for EEEK! (Eno Environmental Education for Kids), the Sustainable Home and Garden Expo, and hands-on exhibits, demos, and workshops to help you and your family learn about the river and the importance of environmental stewardship. Day Trip Idea: Wrightsville Beach
by Kristen Bagwell

Wrightsville Beach is one of my favorite places in the world. When we were growing up, we always headed to Topsail Beach, and in high school we all made the requisite trips to Myrtle Beach SC. Once I hit the college years and beyond, though, it was always Wrightsville or bust.
It's actually much quicker to get to Wrightsville Beach than it used to be (for those of you who remember the trip before I-40 east was finished)...you literally get on the highway, go straight for two hours, and voila!
There are a million and one things to do in the Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach area, and you almost have to decide on your priorities before you get there. If you want to escape and do some shopping, including a leisure lunch, we can help. If you are beach bound with no exceptions, there's a plan for that too. Read on! Read More
Day Trip Idea: Homeland Creamery
by Kristen Bagwell

Have you or your kids ever toured a farm? We had wonderful family friends growing up who owned a dairy farm, but since we moved to NC, we’ve become real city slickers. (Suburb slickers? Anyway.) There are actually quite a few farms in and around the Triangle, but not many are open to visits and tours. Luckily, Homeland Creamery is nearby - just over an hour away - and has tons of things to see!
From the Homeland Creamery http://www.homelandcreamery.com/ website: “Children should have the opportunity to learn that our food (including milk) is produced on a farm and is not just a product of the local grocery store. Our goal is to make sure that your trip to our farm is a good learning experience.” Read More

In addition to winning the Mom’s Choice Award for the Triangle’s Best Children’s Museum, our area moms also voted Marbles as the Best Place to hold a Child’s Birthday Party. When they say “so much to do” they are not kidding! But we’ll talk about that in a minute…For those of you who have not yet discovered all of the wonders of Marbles, let’s get you caught up. Mom's Choice Winner: YMCA Triangle
by Kristen Bagwell

As a young adult, I had a blast working at a YMCA Day Camp during my summers off from school. Now that I am a parent, I view my Y experiences in a whole new light. The YMCA of the Triangle Area has many options for working and at-home parents alike, and is a wonderful (and fun!) choice to help nurture your children and allow them to discover more about themselves.

Day Trip Idea: City of Winston-Salem
by Katie Moosbrugger
You can live 15 minutes away, 45 minutes away, or within walking distance to downtown and there is always something in Winston-Salem worth visiting time and time again. I've only lived in this beautiful city for less than six years and my family and I are constantly discovering new things to do or to see. I love having friends and family come visit so we can show off our city. The influence of history, culture and arts, along with its appeal to families with children of any age, makes Winston-Salem a fantastic place for a day trip. Winston-Salem is an easy 107 miles from Raleigh, straight on I-40 west and follow the signs. Read More
Mom's Choice Winner: Patsy Aiken Outlet
by Kristen Bagwell

When I found out I was having a little girl a few years ago, I could not wait to go shopping! All of my mommy friends warned me, though - when your kids grow so quickly, it’s important to find quality clothing that is also a good value. The Patsy Aiken Outlet in Raleigh is the best of both worlds, offering comfy, high-quality clothing at great prices for children ages newborn through 16. For those of you who have not yet experienced this Mom’s Choice Award-winning store, your next opportunity is coming this Thursday, June 16. Read More

But I have to say the the NC Zoo in Asheboro is one of the best, and I love going back time after time. Read More

Plan your next vacation to the Outer Banks with Twiddy
by Rachel Hoeing, Triad MOM
I have a large extended family, and we love to spend many holidays and vacations together. One of my favorite memories was the first trip we took to Duck, NC with about twenty of us. We rented a beautiful house in the Four Seasons neighborhood and stayed an entire week. My mom reminded me that it was a beautiful summer that year, but the week we chose, it decided to rain almost the entire length of the trip. Surprisingly I did not even remember the bad weather because we had such a good time!
We rented our home through Twiddy. It was a shot in the dark since we had never used their business before, nor had we ever been to the Outer Banks. I am happy to say that this company well exceeded our expectations. This was eight years ago, and my family has continued to rent from them every year since then! Read More

Let's eat out - outside, that is!
by Kristen Bagwell
We've been talking a lot about favorites lately, and I was thinking in the car today...this is absolutely my favorite time of year in NC. The birds are singing, it's nice and sunny, not too hot, and cool enough to sleep with the windows open at night. Best of all, you can finally open your windows without having to power-wash the pollen off of everything nearby. As I type this, I am even smelling honeysuckle through the open window...joy!
So, favorite time of year, favorite weather...favorite pass-times...favorite places to eat outdoors! Are you with me? I made fun of my friend Rachel for "narrowing" her list down to twenty (20?!) but then I started making my own. There are just so many great options for outdoor dining in our area! Here are my top pics in no particular order. What are yours? Read More

Is that cold RSV in disguise?
by Karen Chilton, MD

Before you dismiss your baby’s sniffles as merely a common cold, consider this: What often appears to be a common cold may in fact be a very common virus called RSV in disguise. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a virus that leads to mild, cold-like symptoms in adults and older, healthy children. Unfortunately, RSV can be more serious in young babies, especially to those in certain high-risk groups, and it spreads easily by physical contact. Read More

Special Needs Series: Speech and/or Language Delays
by Kristen Bagwell

It's always amazing to listen to a group of children talking to each other. Some are so articulate, while others are quiet; some don't have any trouble finding words while others have to think, or stutter over their sentences. Some of this may be due to speech or language impairments, one of the most common special needs in our schools today. Though usually found in younger children, speech disorders can linger into late elementary and middle school years depending on the cause. Read More

Special Needs series: ADHD
by Kristen Bagwell

When I was in 4th grade, a child in our class was classified ADD/ADHD. It was a relatively new diagnosis at the time, and seemed to be a very negative thing. “He needs drugs to keep him calm,” said a classmate, which didn’t make this poor child any new friends. However, the class learned to accept his behavior rather than ostracize him for it, despite the fact that there were some subtle differences in his behavior. Read More
Babies: The Fleeting First Year
by guest blogger Melissa Treen

Every expectant mother can tell you exactly how many “weeks” she is at any given time. This may be one of the very few times in life we look at an event with such excitement that we desire to relish each & every day of our journey. As we ready with anticipation throughout each week of pregnancy, 40 weeks seems like forever at times. We long so badly for those weeks to go by so that we can cast our eyes upon the tiny little creation of love we can call our own. When the day finally arrives that we can cradle this little blessing in our arms, we embrace that moment ever so securely, as if time stands still for just an instant. Read More

Seeing Claire Danes win a Golden Globe Sunday night reminded me how much I loved the movie Temple Grandin. What a great segue to this week's special needs topic, autism. Let's start with a simple definition and go from there: Autism is a neurological disorder that affects communication, social interaction skills and behavior. The symptoms usually become evident before a child's third birthday. Read More
Recycle Your Holiday
by Katie Moosbrugger, Triad MOM

Sure, we all know by now how to recycle our Christmas trees. Here in the Triad it's as simple as hauling your tree to the curb (if you live within city limits) and wait for the city to pick it up. (Just know it could take several weeks - but it's so worth it.) But did you know we all create about 25% more trash than normal during this holiday time? Christmas trees are just one small part. There are lots of other things you might normally dispose of that can easily be recycled and/or used again next year. Here are some ideas on how you can recycle your holiday... Read More

We're really torn...date nights are few and far between around here, but at the same time, I'm feeling very "family" these days. Luckily, the Triangle area has something for everyone. I've listed a few of the high points below, but please fill in the gaps. What are you doing New Year's Eve? Read More
Tis the Season for Alternative Gifts!
By Triad MOM guest blogger Rebecca Albertson, author of Traveling With Mercy blog. (This article was originally printed in the December 2010 edition of Forsyth Woman Magazine).
This was too good a topic to pass up. Most of the store references in this article are in the Triad area, but we have some similar spots in the Triangle. For example, there are two Ten Thousand Villages locations, one in Cameron Village, Raleigh and one in Eastgate shopping center in Chapel Hill. Read on... Read More

Considering International Adoption?
By Guest Blogger, Becca Albertson
Chances are, you know someone who has adopted a child internationally, or maybe you’re interested in it yourself. Well, I am a social worker with Carolina Adoption Services who does homestudies (pre-placement assessments and approvals for adoptive families) for families adopting children from other countries (International Adoption). I am also the mama to three kids. We adopted our youngest child, Sam, from Ethiopia two years ago. So I have personal experience as an adoptive mama, as well as an adoptive sister to three girls from Romania. Read More
"A Home Away From Home"
By Rachel H
Although you will hope to never stay in this house, if fate determines that you do so, it is a place that will quickly feel like home. I had the pleasure of touring the Ronald McDonald House in Winston-Salem this past weekend. An addition was recently put on the existing house and it is nothing short of gorgeous.
If you are unfamiliar with the Ronald McDonald House, it is a home where out-of-town families can stay if and when they have a sick child who is receiving services in the hospital. It is a place that it filled with so much love, it is amazing. Everyone who works there is so proud of the House and all it offers to families who need support. Why shouldn't they be? With the new addition to the House, it now has 35 bedrooms to offer to these families. There is always a waiting list, but after this expansion, our local RMH can help twice as many families as they have been able to assist in years past. Read More

Sleeping Angel
By Guest Blogger, Anna Marie Smith
I remember that day like it was just yesterday. Actually, I remember more from what happened on that day than what I could ever remember happening yesterday. It was a Wednesday and I was pregnant with our first child. I was 40 weeks gestation and anxiously awaiting the birth of our beautiful baby. Every day was a gift... Read More
What do you pay your babysitter?
By Rachel Hoeing
My husband and I absolutely loathe the thought of paying a sitter. We love our date nights and know they are sometimes necessary in order to get quality adult time, but the cost of a night out can add up quickly! Then there are those of us who also need sitters or nannies during the day in order to work, run errands, hit the doctor, etc. I think it is important to talk to other moms about what you pay your sitters, so that you are not the mom who is underpaying or even overpaying!
Here are some rates below that we think can serve as a generic rule for paying a sitter. I think these rates are very fair. I also base payment on whether or not the sitter can drive. If I have to pick up the babysitter and/or take her home, I usually pay a little less than if she can drive herself. Read More
Tips from the Coupon Queen!
By Guest Blogger, Cherie Brewer
I have so much to learn from our guest blogger, Cherie, pictured right with her family. You will quickly see why I have given her the title "Coupon Queen" when you read this post. I am amazed at these women who find such great bargains! Just last week at Harris Teeter and CVS, Cherie's total spent was $160 and her total saved was $300. So, she saved 65% on groceries that week. Wow! Plus, the food she bought lasts her family 2-3 weeks. She will only have to purchase milk, bread and a little produce. Cherie also claims to have spent $2 and saved $30 at CVS many times. As you can see, this new craze of couponing certainly pays off. Here are some great tips from Cherie! - Rachel H.

Why I Got Involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters
By Guest Blogger Anitra Mitchell
I asked Anitra to write this blog about her experiences with Big Brothers/Big Sisters after Rachel H and I were invited to a BB/BS luncheon. I knew little about BB/BS at the time, and was amazed to learn so much about this wonderful organization, the parents who give so much of their time and love, and all the incredible "little brothers and sisters." I also had no idea Anitra and her family were involved as "Bigs" before attending this luncheon and discovering her husband is the president of the local BB/BS chapter. Anitra and her husband, Brad, have two beautiful boys: Cooper (age 5) and Turner (age one), and one amazing "little brother" Steven. I hope you enjoy their story. - KM Read More

Birthday Party Idea: Hotel Sleepover!!!
By Guest Blogger, Amy Takacs
My oldest daughter, Natalie, turned 10 this year. A decade of throwing kid birthday parties already under my belt, my goal was to come up with a celebration fit for a gaggle of tweens. We’ve done the park, bouncy tent in the backyard (twice), Children’s museums, Bounce U, slumber party... you name it! Plus, the thought of hosting a bunch of kids coupled with the messy aftermath, I yearned for something with a lot less hassle. Read More

Birthday Party Idea: Under the Sea Theme
By Guest Blogger K.C. Blackwell
I admit I go a little crazy with birthday parties and holidays. It’s not like I’m a great multi-tasker. The house definitely gets a little messier and more breakfast dinners are on the menu when I get focused on an event. I simply do it because I enjoy it. I love sitting in front of the TV at night and putting together goody bags. I love googling hundreds of websites for the perfect cake and favors. I think of the themes months in advance and am always on the lookout for related items. My party zeal started with my son’s 1st birthday party. I had a blast creating an “under the sea” party to celebrate this milestone. Read More
It's Random Acts of Kindness Week
By Rachel Hoeing
Did you know that Random Acts of Kindness Week is February 9 - 15, 2009? This is a perfect time to be a positive role model for your children. “Random Acts of Kindness” are ways that we can make others feel better, or bring joy into their lives without wanting or accepting any credit. I still remember years ago when Oprah aired a whole segment on acts of kindness. That same year, as I was in line for a fast food drive-thru, I got to the window and discovered that the driver in front of me had paid for my meal! It was such a wonderful gesture! I have done the same thing for others a few times since then, and it honestly made me smile the rest of the day, thinking about how happy it may have made that person. I have listed a few ideas for families below.
I got these ideas from the website www.actsofkindness.org. Visit it to get even more ideas for kids or communities. I personally think that many of these ideas are made even better when you do them anonymously! Share these ideas with your children and choose a few to do during Random Acts of Kindness Week. Hopefully it will make all of you feel so good that you will continue to do things like this all year through! Read More
An Unexpected Turn
By Rachel Hoeing and Guest Blogger Monica McGuire
I honestly believe that some people are put on this earth to inspire and help others. After hearing Monica’s story and the optimism she exudes, I believe she is one of these people. Monica McGuire lives in High Point with her husband of 5 years, James, and her adorable 3 year-old son, Connor. James is an occupational therapist and Monica formerly worked as a registered nurse, but is now enjoying her role as a stay-at-home Mom where she gets paid in hugs, kisses, and smiles. We are happy to have her as a guest blogger today to share her story. Monica has encouraged any parent who may be facing a situation similar to hers, to reach out to her. A link to her blog is at the end of this post, and we encourage you to take a peek and follow along their journey. ... Rachel Read More
