Who's your favorite?
The {what} Queen?
by Kristen Bagwell
For those of you who don't want to talk about anything below the belt, now is the time to divert your eyes. This is one of those topics that I was thinking about in the car yesterday and, well, here we are.
I have a seven-month old baby at home. While I was expecting, there were several occasions where I met up with friends that I have not seen in a few years. "Oh, you look great, how far along are you?" quickly turned to "You know, you really do need to do those kegel exercises and also begin yoga now." Somehow, we got into a discussion about coughing, jumping on a trampoline, and many other things that would become taboo with the birth of my second child. "Things don't bounce back as quickly after #2 so be aware of that...and we mean your weight, your hormones, and your hoo hoo." (To be fair, these are my sorority sisters...but REALLY??) Read More

Earlier this week, Katie M. of Triad MOM really said it best...Thinking of all of our moms today, amd nissing those who are no longer with us on earth. Thanks Moms! ~Kristen B.
We all know there is nothing more powerful than a mother's love. This Mother's Day, let's make a special point to reflect on the love we've received - and continue to receive - from our own mothers, stepmothers, mothers-in-law, grandmothers and great grandmothers. Without their devotion, support and life lessons, many of us would not be the mothers we are today. Read More

Have a great Mothers Day weekend!

Happy Mothers' Day weekend to all of you from the moms right here on our TMOM team! I thought today was a great day to post this reminder from Mother Teresa. These verses were reportedly written on her wall for children in Calcutta, India. (Our friend Rachel at Triad MOM printed this out and posted it on her fridge after seeing it on her mother-in-law's refrigerator for years, and shared them with us.) These are great words for moms - and families - to live by every day. Read More

Mother's Little Helper
by Kimberly Froeschner

**Before we begin, let me state that this post is intended to let other women who may be going through the same thing know that they are not alone. Perhaps someone will read it and recognize herself in it. We all love our children and want what's best for them, but sometimes that means doing what's best for Mom as well.**
I remember when I was a carefree Singleton listening to the Rolling Stones song "Mother's Little Helper" and picturing a frazzled old house frau with curlers in her hair wearing a housecoat with a glass of vodka in her hand. In my mind it was only this type of woman who would take Valium, and then, only because she was a whiny person who just couldn't make it through the day on her own. Read More

Helping Kids Make $en$e of Money!

“I want THAT, Mom. Pleeeeease!!!” This is probably something you have heard many times if you have dared to walk through Target or Wal-Mart with your children in tow. As adults, we know that children can’t have everything they think they want, especially in the current economic time. However, this can be difficult to explain since most children have very little understanding of money and how it works. Read More

My older sister is one of those people who is good at almost everything. It's kind of annoying really: growing up, she was the math & science girl (genius) and I was the english & socialite type (not-as-genius). Imagine my dismay each time I realize how much more articulate she is than I...Bleh. With that said, though, I have to admit - she covers a sensitive topic with honesty here, and I sincerely appreciate her point of view. I hope you do too. ~Kristen
I had the luxury one weekend of getting a vacation from my family - spending the weekend at a scrapbooking retreat, with a group of new friends. The scrapbooking was great, the laughter loud, the reminiscing a bit teary. And then we started talking about church.
Now before I start this, I will say this about my friends. They are lovely. "Lovely" isn't a word I use all that often - it feels contrived. But lovely they were, generous and kind to the new girl and her friend. I genuinely enjoyed their company, and can't wait to do it again. Read More

This is your face on Botox
By Guest Blogger Julee Nunley
A few weeks ago, Katie at Triad MOM wrote a post on wrinkles and asked in the comments section if someone who had tried Botox would share her experience. I have done it a few times and although I didn't do it for cosmetic reasons, I did get some cosmetic benefit. So, my experience may not be the typical one for someone who just wants to get rid of wrinkles, but I do think I can give you some idea of what it would be like.
You may be wondering why someone would get Botox if not for cosmetic reasons. There are a few medical uses for it, including treatment of migraines. In my case, it was to treat a facial twitch that I have as the result of having Bell's Palsy during my first pregnancy. Read More

Why I don't answer my phone
By Rachel Hoeing
We'd been planning to save this post for a Sunday funny, but after this weekend, it seems particularly relevant...enjoy! Thanks Rachel! ~KB
I had been playing phone tag with a friend of mine for a while. Once we finally got in touch we enjoyed catching up and then she commented, “Well I had been trying to call forever, you but you didn’t answer your phone!” It was almost an underlying dig somehow insinuating that I was avoiding her call or purposely did not answer because I did not want to talk to her. I didn’t comment, but had one of those moments after we hung up where you think, “Awww man, I should have said …”
So today I will say what I should have said. This situation got me thinking about the fact that we have become WAY too accessible.(Email, texts, home phone, cell phone, etc) It irked me because there are about a thousand reasons why I may not answer my phone and none of them have to do with WHO is calling. Beware, much sarcasm ahead.
So what I should have said was, “Did you ever consider … Read More
Are girls just being girls?
By Guest Blogger, Melissa Norman, Founder & Executive Director of Girl CHARGE, Inc.
Ask any female if they have ever been disappointed by a friendship, if they have ever known the confusion and hurt of having other girls turn on them, and most will respond affirmatively. Beyond that, most will recall the incident with more clarity and emotion than they remember first days of school, birthdays or other seemingly important milestones. The pain rushes back as if the event took place yesterday. Female betrayal is certainly not a new phenomenon; yet every girl tends to feel as if she is the first victim. And so the vicious cycle continues.
I, too, have lucid memories of my own experience with relational aggression. While I was on the receiving end, some are bystanders and some are the ones creating the behavior. However, most girls do experience it in some role. As a teacher and counselor, I have grown increasingly exasperated of hearing adults excuse this behavior as “girls just being girls” or tales of “mean girls” and “Barbie brats”. At what point did we determine that it is acceptable for girls to ostracize and humiliate other girls? When did spreading rumors and gossiping become the norm in regards to female behavior? Read More

You know, marriage is a funny thing. How often have you heard "You think you know a person..." Now, quick: how often have you thought that about your own spouse? Seriously. I cannot be the only one.

I am proud to be married to a veteran, and proud of his service to our country. Evidently, he needed some guidance after a rocky upbringing, and after enlisting himself and serving our country for a few years, he emerged an older, wiser, better man.

When did I get old?!
by Kristen Bagwell

Little things this week keep reminding me that I am aging. For example...yesterday my boss showed up wearing one of those strappy things around his upper forearm, just below the elbow. Turns out he has tennis elbow (although not from playing tennis) and casually mentions that things don't heal as fast as they used to. He is not all that much older than I am.
Which brings me to my next point: Wednesday morning, when I mentioned getting up in the night (with baby) to another colleague, he replied "Oh, that's what it is. I thought you looked different today...I guess it's because you're tired. Showing around your eyes, mainly." Captain Sensitivity, reporting for duty. Must we say these things out loud? Read More
Marijuana - Is It Everywhere?
By Rachel Hoeing
Teens and Drugs - Do you think it is a
battle worth fighting?
A few weeks ago I had lunch with a friend who told
me that she had recently discovered her 15 year old daughter smoking pot. She
was upset, of course, and told me how she and her husband debated on how to
handle the issue. She told me about the talk they had with her daughter and the
things her teen told them about drug use in her school and with her
friends.
My friend then said, "You know what, Rachel? Marijuana is
everywhere. I have decided that there just isn't much I can do about
it."
I was a little taken aback. Although this friend was a party-girl
herself, it surprised me that she was willing to allow her 15 year old daughter
to continue to use an illegal drug without putting up much of a fight. I can't
really remember how I replied, but after I got home and replayed this situation
in my head and knew I wanted to blog about it. Read More

No, there's no app for that...
by Guest Blogger, Heather Keenan
In a world where it seems new gadgets are invented weekly to make our daily routines easier I have found, as a mother, that there are just some things in life that still have to be done the old fashioned way, with time and lots of patience. That being said, I have discovered that I do not always excel in the patience department with my adorable, loving, strong willed two-year-old! After a particularly rough day with her I decided to take some time out to reflect on what could be done to make sure that days like those were limited. This is what I came up with.
The main issue at our house as of late is potty training. I'm not a fan of the wording, potty "training", so let's call it potty "time". While she has been using the potty for a few months now, and doing very well, she does, just like two-year-olds do, have the dreaded accident here and there. I can deal with that. Most of the time. Then there are those times where I swear she is just peeing on the floor for fun. That's where my patience issue comes into play. Read More

Does size really matter?
By Katie Moosbrugger
Is bigger always better? Oh please...I hope you don't think I'm writing about THAT! Actually I AM referring to certain body parts - but those found only on a female. I'm talking about breasts. Boobs, hooters, rack, ta tas, bosom, knockers - whatever you call 'em - we've all got 'em. To some of us, breasts represent womanhood, femininity, and sexuality. To others they define motherhood and nurturing in the purest sense. And to those of you who are anatomically gifted, I bet you'll argue there's nothing more powerful than cleavage when it comes to getting what you want.
So when it comes to our breasts, today I'm asking what price would you pay (literally) to keep those pecs nice and perky? Read More

Alone Time
by Kristen Bagwell

Every once in a while, I think about how nice it would be to just be alone for a while. You know...go potty without hearing "MOMMY! Can you see my FINGERS?!" as the little hands are shoved under the door. Or to have a meal that you get to eat every bite of, sitting down, peacefully as opposed to eating about 1/3 of it, sharing about 1/3, and getting up so many times in between that you abandon the last 1/3 in favor of a bowl of ice cream. Hypothetically, of course.
Well, over the past few days, I got my wish. My husband was on a business trip from Thursday through Sunday morning, and silly me thought "oooh...once I get the kids in bed, I will have some alone time!" It's amazing how naieve I can be. Read More

The Drive Thru Argument
by Kristen Bagwell

The title of this post sounds somewhat like a marital event, at least in my house...but that's a story for another time. The drive thru to which I am referring is the fast food drive thru, which I love and hate equally.
Love: french fries. Come on! Who doesn't love some fast food french fries?
Hate: The Guilt. Every mom who has fed her child fast food has experienced "the guilt" to some extent.
I understand that fast food marketers usually target kids. I understand that movies like Supersize Me and Fast Food Nation show some significant issues with the fast food industry. My question is this - if we as parents grew up with the occasional fast food meal and have lived to tell about it, can we not assume that our kids will be okay as well, as long as fast food is not a way of life? Welcome to crazy, population: Mom

I've been trying to think of the right way to describe the events and feelings of the past few weeks. During this time, I have put baby #2 into day care (already?!), gone back to work, tried to tie up loose ends for the holidays, hosted family for the holidays, not-exactly-decorated my house for the holidays, and attended one too many parties over the holidays.

The Amazing Sense of Smell

I picked up my daughter’s Strawberry Shortcake doll the other day and it immediately took me back to my childhood. That strawberry smell (that actually smells nothing like strawberries) is embedded in my brain as a reminder of childhood happiness.
It is amazing how a simple smell can transport you to specific time and place and can quickly give you that warm feeling of comfort. I think it is so important to teach our kids how to literally “stop and smell the roses!” My mom always picked Honeysuckle with us and let us taste it. Even to this day as I am walking past a Honeysuckle bush, it reminds me of my childhood and brings a smile to my face. Read More

I'm Telling
by guest blogger Courtney Murphy, author of www.courtontherun.blogspot.com
If you have more than one child at home who can talk, the words "I'm telling" probably cause you to grind your teeth and run the other direction as fast as you can just like me. At our house, the frequency of these words usually increases significantly during the witching hour when everyone is tired, hungry and I'm trying to cook dinner.
Yesterday, one of my children actually told on his brother for....wait for it....stealing the imaginary football that they were playing with. Mind you, they were playing an actual imaginary football game, so taking the imaginary football would probably be a legal play. This particular tattle actually left me speechless for a second....but my child kept repeating it to make sure I heard and could issue appropriate punishment. "You're kidding, right?" I asked him, "You are actually telling on your brother for taking an imaginary football in an imaginary football game? Why don't you just take it back?" Probably not the best response, but seriously, an imaginary football? What was I supposed to say? Read More

A Moment of Silence
by The Moms on Main Team

Today we were supposed to upload a light-hearted blog written by Rachel, but it just did not seem right. Nor does it seem acceptable to run a blog written by anyone else today. For those of you who have not heard, Rachel is saying her final goodbye to her father today. This, just three short months after she said goodbye to her mother.
Sometime during the night of Tuesday, November 15, Rachel’s father passed peacefully away. The medical examiner report showed he had a blockage in his heart. But Rachel – and all of her friends and family – truly believe he died from a broken heart after losing his wife.
Even in this most difficult time, Rachel has been able to find some comfort. She wrote, “Our hearts are broken here on earth, but my parents are reunited and smiling in Heaven.”
Out of respect for Rachel, her dad, and Rachel’s family - all of us at Triad Moms on Main and Triangle Moms on Main - would like to observe a moment of silence on the site today. You are welcome to share a prayer for her and her family. Read More

My story: part 2
By Rachel Hoeing and guest blogger
Patrice Williams
We are happy to share a second post from our Triad MOM 2011 Mother of the Year today. Patrice Williams has an incredible and inspirational story to tell. If you missed Part One, you can read it here. Today her story continues and we hope it brings comfort to some of you who may have been through a similar situation ...
Currently, we are doing a Beth Moore video bible study at church on Wednesday nights. Last Wednesday, Beth (you know, because I like to pretend we’re on a first name basis) asked, “How many of you know the kind of pain that is so intense you don’t think you will survive it? Who knows the kind of pain that you think will literally kill you?” I raised my hand, along with several other women in the auditorium. And I thought to myself, “I bet they’re looking at me, not knowing what I’ve been through, thinking that I’m too young to know real pain.” (Keep in mind that there was no indication at all that this is what they were thinking, but I like to play out pretend scenarios and conversations in my head that have little to no basis in reality. Also, I like to pretend I’m still young. Ahem.) Anyway, my point is, I know that kind of pain. Read More

Do you ever have a day that just makes your heart smile? Last week, with my five week old baby in tow, I dropped off big sister at school, went to a mompreneurs get-together, then had coffee with an old friend, and then met a pal to pick up a baby swing for the little crankster. When my husband called to see what we were up to, he simply said

taking a nap...you haven't slept well in weeks." Read More

To Swaddle or Not to Swaddle
by guest blogger Shannon Ford
.jpg)
My girlfriend is pregnant with her first child and just asked me about my opinion of swaddling. She is due in November and was told that swaddling is no longer taught in birthing classes offered at the hospital.
I was enrolled in the classes; however, my son decided to arrive early. I had Luke on Sunday, and I was scheduled to begin the classes the following Monday. Needless to say, my money was refunded, and I never had the class.
I had friends on both ends of the spectrum of swaddling opinions. My girlfriend with two children had sworn by this method in order for her babies to sleep. Another friend had her first child and swore the baby hated being swaddled, and in addition, she thought it was cruel. I really had no opinion. I think I lived in that new mom fantasy world of believing that my baby would sleep regardless of the method I used. HA! Read More

And The World Keeps Turning
by Rachel Hoeing
Over the summer I took an unexpected leave of absence from Triad Moms on Main. Hopefully most of you did not even notice, and that is because of the incredible women on my team who kept the site going strong. I do not know what I would have done without them.
This summer was nowhere close to what my family had anticipated. In addition to lazy days at the pool, trips to visit relatives, and a few camps for the kids, we had planned a cruise to the Bahamas and a trip to Hilton Head, all with my parents and sister. Instead, I ended up spending the majority of the summer in a hospital room at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with my mom.
I have mentioned in previous blogs that my mom has battled ovarian cancer for quite some time. She was diagnosed 12 years ago, underwent chemo and a hysterectomy and was then cancer free for about 7 years. Four years ago, the cancer resurfaced in different areas, but was still considered the same ovarian cancer. My mom was tough. Through tears and much pain, she underwent chemo and radiation for the majority of the past four years. All the while, she taught preschool in Charlotte, came to visit our family, entertained us at their home frequently, took numerous trips, and did it all with laughs and smiles. Read More

An Email From the Big Guy
by guest blogger Cara McLauchlan

Recently my husband and I were enjoying a sporting event on TV. We couldn’t help but notice most of the fans were not watching, but were looking down at their phones the entire time. Part of me was completely annoyed, but part of me understands.
There is something wonderful about connection. I find e-mail is the first thing I want to do in the morning and the last thing I want to do at night. I know it’s ridiculous. That got me thinking about what God would have to say about e-mail. What would He say in Facebook updates? “Just healed someone. Prevented natural disaster. Whew! LOL” Read More

Haircolor at home: one tragic tale
by Anonymous

I have spent more years and more money having my hair colored than I should admit. It may be an addiction and especially now that I have gray hair - you can't just stop. But what a pain to get to the salon, get everyone else busy doing something for 2 to 2.5 hours so you can sneak away, and then there's the cost, which is a real splurge. So I started thinking: you can color your own hair, right? So many women do it and it has to be faster and maybe just as easy? At least I can do it on my own time, right? Read More

Of course, my blogging pals and I think everyone should have a blog if they want one, but it's a little intimidating to get started. The key to beginning is to know what your purpose will be. Are you blogging to simply record your own or your family's adventures? Are you trying to start a small business via the blogosphere? What the...pregnant belly painting?
by Kristen Bagwell

This is going to be one of those posts that demonstrates how much I don't know. So, let's discuss: pregnant belly painting. Quite honestly, the first time I heard about this I laughed. Then, when I thought about it some more, I was mildly horrified. My pregnant belly has been a source of many things: joy, discomfort, amazement...but usually, entertainment and/or self-expression were not on my list.
I can't say for sure, but perhaps we have Mariah Carey to thank for the spreading of this trend. Sometime last year, dear Mariah showed a photo of her twin-baby bump painted in a butterfly design. At the time, I dismissed it as a "weird celebrity trend" and/or an "only Mariah Carey would do something like that" thing. For some reason, though, I kept hearing about it after that. In my own third trimester, I decided to google "pregnant belly painting" to see what the deal was. Read More
Do You Deserve a Push Present?
By Rachel Hoeing
A few weeks ago, a group of my girlfriends got into a discussion about "push presents." If you have never heard this term before, it refers to a gift given to a mom (usually by the dad) after giving birth to a child. These presents are traditionally jewelry or a trip.
Well, the discussion got very heated with many different opinions and I could not believe how passionate some people were about this topic! Wow! We had one end of the spectrum with mothers who felt that the gift was well-deserved after nine months of carrying the baby and hours of delivery. They felt that the gift was not only deserved, but expected. Read More

It absolutely cracks me up when I hear people say, “Oh, I just loved being pregnant! I felt so full of life and always had a glow about me!” I have no way of relating to those statements. Do You Sport a Momiform?
by Katie Moosbrugger

momiform (mom-a-form) n. the official or distinctive clothes or outfit worn by mothers, especially when on duty
Otherwise known as work-out clothes or the same pair of jeans and same style T-shirt day after day after day. Yep, that pretty much defines my wardrobe. Thoughts from a Stepmom
by guest blogger Kimberly F.

As we prepared to send J off to college for the first time, I started thinking about the past 11 years I have spent with him as his step-mom. (I’m currently the mom of a 2 ½ year old as well and yes, that’s a big jump.) I wondered about what it would be like if I was ever in the situation of being divorced and someone else was to be my child’s step-mom. I don’t know how I could possibly handle such a situation. Fortunately, I don’t foresee that being an issue for me because my husband and I seem to be made for each other – for better or worse! I never intended to be anyone’s step-mom, but these things happen when you fall in love with someone who just happens to be divorced and a dad. Read More

Wow...or What The ? You Decide...
by Katie Moosbrugger
A couple of months ago I went out to lunch with some girlfriends. We were quietly enjoying ourselves on the restaurant's outdoor patio when an older woman (probably in her 60s) came bumbling through the gate with a double stroller and two tiny newborns inside.
She immediately caught my attention with her awkward entrance, but then I became fixated on the two precious babies who were soundly sleeping despite their bumpy ride. I also happened to notice one of the baby's arms was unnaturally sticking out of the stroller in harm's way. The woman kept pushing her way to a table and I was horrified thinking something might happen to the baby's arm. Plus, where was the mother? These babies couldn't have been more than a month old, and clearly she wasn't their mother - perhaps the grandmother - but how often do you see tiny newborns out-and-about without their mother or father close by? However, for some reason, I have not been able to escape the song "Last Friday Night" by Katy Perry lately - I must have heard it 5487 times this week. A Raw Deal - in the good way
by Kristen Bagwell

Have any of you tried a raw food diet? I have been mildly obsessed with this idea for a few months, but major dietary change is not generally encouraged mid-pregnancy, so I've been dabbling. It all started when I saw an ad somewhere (facebook?) about Dr. Oz and his "28-day raw challenge." Evidently, the raw food method of eating produces substantial weight loss for those who adopt the program, even temporarily...but maybe we should start with a definition.
According to www.webmd.com:
The fundamental principle behind raw foodism, also sometimes called rawism, is that plant foods in their most natural state – uncooked and unprocessed – are also the most wholesome for the body. WebMD goes on to emphasize that rawism is not a diet; it is a lifestyle choice. Most raw foodists spend a lot of time researching and experimenting with recipes, preparation methods, and resources. Raw "cooking" means that nothing can be heated above 115-118 degrees in order to preserve the food and its healthful enzymes in their natural state. Research does show that cooking does leach at least some portion of nutrients from foods, and that people who comsume large amounts of fresh foods tend to be at lower risk for certain types of cancers. But how to even get started? Read More
Cutting out the Chemicals
by guest blogger Jessica Sheedy
What Mom doesn’t want the best for her kids and family? We all strive to lead healthier lives, and recent news of dangerous chemicals and irritants in products we use every day has become more prominent. There is an overwhelming amount of information out there about what choices we should be making regarding cleaning products, food storage, and even personal care products like makeup and baby shampoos/soaps.
My sister was just recently diagnosed with breast cancer at age 32, which made me really think about a lot of things, but especially how my family lives and the future I want for my two boys, Evan (7) and Alex (5). To be clear, I am not the most ardent environmentalist by any means, but I do know that making these changes will have a positive affect on my family and our health. With innovation and popularity of convenience, we’ve lost a lot regarding personal safety and responsibility for our planet. Not sure where to start? Check out this list of small changes that can have a dramatic impact on your family’s health: Read More

How do you keep your sanity during pregnancy?
by Kristen Bagwell

I was having one of my better mornings...smooth a.m. routine, everyone on time and in a decent mood, and then it happened - a song came on the radio and I was sobbing my eyes out. Normally this happens once in a blue moon but the past 7+ months I have had to allow for hormones <insert eye roll here> and the reactions they cause. During my first pregnancy, I'd have thought "Oh eMm Gee! I am clinically depressed, something must be wrong with the baby" etc etc. Now I give myself a mini-eye roll, reach for the tissues, and let it pass.
There's something hard about adjusting your "normal" even if it's temporary, and even if it's to allow for a happy event. (If you're me, there's also some anxiety, worry that I am doing something wrong, and difficulty accepting that not-like-unpregnant-me is okay for a while.) With all of that said, I wanted to make a list of tips and advice that I wish someone had offered me. Actually, I suppose these are tips and tricks that I have collected over the past 4+ years, but it's nice to have them all in one place. Ready? (and then you can add yours as "comments" below!) Everyday Things
by guest blogger Susan M.

Motherhood didn't so much call to me as mowed me down in its wake. I never planned on having children, honestly - I wasn't the camp counselor the kids adored, the favorite babysitter, the peer counselor in the elementary school. I was the snarky aloof kid, busily looking for things to make fun of. (I'm sure you're all shocked.) Motherhood was sort of inevitable, I guessed, but nothing I really desired. There are lots of times that I still wonder how I got here, how I'll survive it, and how soon I should start my children's therapy. Read More

Bathing Suit Bargains
by Rachel Hoeing, Triad MOM
A big thank you to Rachel for doing all the hard work...now it's time to find some swimsuit deals!
Summer is half over. (Gulp) But now is the time to stock up on swimwear for your children for next summer! I know some of you are a little apprehensive about purchasing clothing for the future when you have no idea how much your child will grow over the next twelve months, but I have done this for years and more often than not, the clothes fit.
I usually buy one size up, and if it looks tiny, I will go two sizes up. Better to have something too big and put it back in the closet for another season, than too small and they never get to wear it. If you do end up ordering things that are too small by the time the next season rolls around, you can always consign! A bathing suit with tags still on it will sell!
Here are a few of my favorite children's clothing websites that currently have their swimwear on sale. Simply visit the site and click on the children's section and clearance/sale section! *Many of these have adult swimwear on sale, too! Read More

Two nuns were shopping at a 7-11 store. As they passed by the beer cooler, one nun said to the other “wouldn’t a nice cool beer or two taste wonderful on a hot summer evening?”
The second nun answered “indeed it would, sister, but I would not feel comfortable buying beer, since I am certain it would cause a scene at the checkout stand.”
“I can handle that without a problem,” the other nun replied, and she picked up a six-pack and headed for the checkout. Read More
Word Play
by Kristen Bagwell

I've been known to screw up words on purpose just for fun. For example - "not necess-celery" (although I had to stop that one after my niece started using it as her form of "necessarily." I was proud, but in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't the best idea.) There's also pro-kristen-ate, which gets used a lot as I tend to put off certain chores. My friend Michael invented "shload" which is another favorite, meaning "a LOT." (Combine sh** + load and you get shload. Genius!)
It seems that I have passed this skill to my daughter, to some extent. Her current favorite song? "Ring a ring a rosey, pocka pocka posey, ass-kiss, ass-kiss, we all fall DOWN." Guessing she didn't learn that one at school, exactly. But I digress. Read More

Although the journey has been tough, Patrice has found a way to smile and inspire others through her blog. We wanted her to share her story with all of you in a series of posts. Today is the first. On Sunday morning, April 20th, 2008, my husband, Matt, and I were sitting in our young couples Sunday school at church and we were watching a video of David Ring. Do you know him? He is an amazing man, afflicted with Cerebral Palsy since birth, with an amazing story. The short version of his story is that he had a very hard childhood, his mother being his best friend and greatest (and many times, only) advocate in the entire world. On top of his CP and the constant embarrassment, ridicule, and discouragement he endured, he became an orphan at the age of just 14 years old. Passed around from family to family, rejected and alone, he struggled to know if life was worth living. (Spoiler alert: he decided it was and has a wonderful life today!) Read More

You know how you have those days when you really need to be on your game and there's just a hiccup around every corner? Pile on a double-dose of tired and a few pregnant hormones and you've got it...day 196, "In Which She Completely Loses Her Mind."
Let's discuss. After dragging myself and the mini out of bed, into the car, and to her school, I get back into the car and feel a breeze under my arm. Odd, yes? Not that odd when I notice the huge tear under the arm of my shirt. RATS! Back home for an outfit change, although I did consider trying to keep the hole tucked under my arm pit. If I had not had a meeting with my boss's boss today, I'd have worn the shirt. *I think.* This is how tired I was. Read More
Finding the Balance
by Rachel Hoeing
I have always been the organized one, the detail-oriented one, the one who is always on time, the one who has things planned two weeks in advance. You know, typical Type-A. Not anymore. I don't know what has happened to me and I need advice!
I was a school teacher until I had my first child and then decided to stay home with him, but I have always had some sort of income/job while raising a family. They were all part-time gigs, and up until a year ago, I could still juggle it all. I was still the first one to send a birthday card. I was still always on time. I volunteered at school. My house was usually clean, and my family and I had plenty of quality time together. Read More
The BFF Break-Up
By Rachel Hoeing
One of my favorite pastimes is watching the Real Housewives shows on Bravo. I know some of you are rolling your eyes, but I promise - they are so fun to watch! Seriously! Drama, back-stabbing, cat fights ... I love it because it is a reality show so far from my reality! It is a time to watch other people and feel like I am one normal chick! (Don't ask how I have time to watch crap like this on TV. I don't, but I do it anyway!) But there are certain things that happen on these shows that make me wonder if they are really all that far from our "non-celebrity" reality.
In case you are not familiar with the Housewives shows, there have been shows in many different areas of the country - NJ, NY, Orange County, Miami, Beverly Hills, etc. One thing I have noticed on all the Real Housewives Shows is how they all change their friends like I change my clothes. As the season begins, Peggy and Alexis may be BFF, but as it draws to a close, the claws have come out and they can't stand the sight of one another. Same goes for Nene and Kim, Jill and Bethenny, Jill and Ramona, Danielle and Jacqueline, Gretchen and Tamra and many more. Read More
Let's Get This Party Started! (NOT!)
by Anonymous
This blog was submitted to our sister site, Triad Moms on Main, after a survey and news feature on underage drinking in their area. It was thought-provoking for the Triad readers, and we're betting that ourTriangle readers will also have some input. Let us know what you think!
I have a couple of friends who allow their teenagers to have parties. The parents provide the beer as long as no one leaves the house. They tell me, “Well, they are going to do it anyway, so at least they are safe here and not out driving.” I have been trying to determine what I think about that, and my answer on the survey has helped clarify my murky feelings.
First of all, I think we Americans are a bit silly about drinking. We have made it OK to die for your country at the age of 18, but not OK to have a drink until you are 21. So do I think allowing a teenager to taste a sip of fine wine at a nice dinner is a terrible thing? Well, no. However, I cannot condone what my friends allow their teens to do. Read More

From my sweet little five year old . . .
As we sit down for dinner one Saturday, my husband returning from washing his hands asks, "Who left some kids in the pool?" (AKA "Who forgot to flush?")
The denial started, and the mystery began to be unraveled. It seems that only one of my two sons had been inside in the last hour. The interrogation follows.
Dad: "Well if your brother and I stayed outside then who- WHO could it be?" Read More
The Thomas Jefferson Style Summer
by guest blogger Cara McLauchlan

“What are you doing this summer?” is one of my favorite questions to ask.
I love living vicariously through other people’s cool plans of trips to the beach, mountain visits, fun excursions and neat-o camps. The best answer I have heard comes from a fellow homeschooling buddy who said “I’m having a Thomas Jefferson style summer.” Read More
Where does your relationship stand?
by guest Blogger Kim Buccino
How do I begin writing about Marriage and Couples when there are so many topics that can be discussed in this subject matter? The most basic point to start from would be; how do we see ourselves and our spouses/partners in terms of our concept of what a relationship is?
It has been my experience that just as there is no cookie cutter parenting style due to the fact that each child and circumstance is different, so too have I come to realize that no two relationships are the same. What may work for one couple may not work for another. This also applies to our own varied experiences in our history with our different relationships. What worked with your partner from the past may be null and void in your current relationship.
Which brings us back to the original question; how do we see ourselves and our spouses/partners in terms of our concept of what a relationship is? Read More

In honor of Father's Day today, we're going a shout-out to all the boys out there...Many of you know that I am expecting a baby boy in early October, and I already have a little girl. My mommy friends keep mentioning how much fun it is to have boy children, and how different boys are from girls. However, I received an email from a childhood friend who has two sons, and I think this says it all. Brace yourself: these photos are hysterical! Read More
Now Serving Table 6
by guest blogger Susan M.

There are things that you would think that might be the bane of my existence. Bats, perhaps. But I'll let you in on a little secret - the bane of my existence is dinner.
No really. It's dinner.
It's not so much the actual food of dinner that drives me crazy, nor, in all honestly, the family around the table part. Although, around the 40th "Why did the cow cross the road" joke, it comes pretty close. (For some inexplicable reason, this is what dinner winds up as at my house, and a refined sense of humor is clearly not in my children's genetic code.) Read More

Gift Ideas for Teachers
by Rachel Hoeing
Teachers might as well be the target of Donna Summer’s song “She Works Hard for the Money.” Teachers put in a full day of work inside the school walls, but also spend hours upon hours planning, grading, and assessing at home as well. We all want to show them our appreciation at the holidays. Even if you are low on money this year, a handmade card or treat from the student is always cherished. I have a few favorite gifts from all price ranges that I received throughout my years of teaching. I hope these ideas are helpful as you make your gift lists this year. Read More
The Arrival of the Mean Girls
by guest blogger Kristen Daukas, author of www.fourhensandarooster.com
You never know exactly when it happens. It just does. From the day she started school, your daughter has always had a big circle of friends and plenty of play dates. Then, one day it just seems that she doesn’t want to be around the friends she’s had since kindergarten or you notice the invitations seemingly dry up. You rack your brain trying to figure it out - put your finger on “what” or “when” things changed. How can you change this? What can you do? What is going on?
There’s a good chance it’s the arrival of the Mean Girls. For many of us, this is the first real wake up call that the sweet, fun and games and innocence of childhood are truly short lived. You’re at a loss. Where are those happy, giggly, fun little girls who would play for hours on end? Hosting sleep over after sleep over and swear their un-dying love for each other with the promise of being eternal BFFs? Read More

Are you a "Sanctimommy?"
by Anonymous
When I was working the other day, I needed to look up something in Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary. They often have fun, new, lingo popup ads, and I usually click on them. Today’s term was “Sanctimommy.” It means, “a mother who points out perceived faults in the parenting of others.”
Unfortunately, this definition conjured up a memory. Last summer, I brought flavored water pouches for all of the kids at a playground play date. My friend’s kids had never had them before, so I asked if it was OK to share them. She said something like, “I guess so. You see, we never have those. We just don’t need that kind of waste at our house.” Oh, snap. Read More
Change is...good?
by Kristen Bagwell

I was cruising through the morning yesterday, congratulating myself for being mostly on time, with mostly no fits from my 3-year old, until we got to school drop off. Everything was going normally until her teacher took me aside (which she never does) and said "You know, you're the only person I didn't get to talk to last Friday..."
About 1000 thoughts ran through my head, ranging from "I think you should name the new baby Ronald" to "Peyton got out the lefty scissors and was trying to kill her best friend at nap time" to "We really liked the doughnuts you brought for teacher appreciation day." Amazing how nervous I can get in the span of 2.3 seconds! Her actual words, though, were not good at all: "Friday is my last day." Read More

Mother's Day, part 2
by Kristen Bagwell

Looking back through some of my favorite Mother's Day things, I came across an older blog from Rachel, one of the co-founders at Triad MOM. In her introduction, she said "I thought today was a great day to post this reminder from Mother Teresa. These verses were reportedly written on her wall for children in Calcutta, India. My mother-in-law has had this on her refrigerator for as long as I can remember, and a few years ago I printed this out and hung it on mine as well."
I do realize that Mother's Day has come and gone...but in a way, isn't every day Mother's Day? I hope you all had a wonderful time yesterday, and enjoy these words from Mother Teresa this morning. Read More

What are you doing for Mother's Day?

My husband came in the other day and said "okay, now let me get this straight...you want the _____ for Mother's Day, right? Are you ordering that or am I? You know it's probably not going to get here in time, right? So I am not going to get in trouble for walking in with nothing to open on Sunday?" A few of my favorite things
by Kristen Bagwell

I have tons of favorite things, and most of them are usually centered around food. It's been 3 years since my first pregnancy, though, and I've been getting reacquainted with some of my former can't-miss items (and finding some new ones). The good news is, most of these are useful whether you're pregnant or not. I tended to switch "things" every 4 weeks or so during my last pregnancy, but these five have definite staying power.
Maternity or not, I always love hearing about people's favorites, so be sure to let me know some of yours at the bottom of this post. Speaking of "tell me your favorites," today is newsletter day, and it will include the Mom's Choice survey link. Don't forget to go nominate your top choices in each category! Be Happy Now
Author unknown

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be more content when they are.
After that, we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, when we are able to go on a nice vacation, or when we retire.
The truth is, there’s no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with challenges. It’s best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with… and remember that time waits for no one.
So, stop waiting…. Read More
It's in the bag - literally
by Kristen Bagwell

What is it with me and my purse?
In most areas of my life, I can stay pretty organized. For some reason, though, my purse and my car seem to always be a disaster. I have to clean out the car once a week because I literally can't fit the groceries in (and it's a big car, so that's saying something.) As for my purse, I do not carry a large bag because I tend to fill them up until they are too heavy to carry. Case in point: earlier this week, I cleaned my purse and found the following pile o' junk. Read More

5pm Fab Find - Free Gift from the Happy Magpie!

A Spring Haiku

If your life were a Haiku poem, what would it be?

How Old Is Too Old?
By Rachel Hoeing, Triad MOM
My first child was a boy, so since he was born, I have always taken him into the Ladies’ Restroom with me when we are out in public. He just turned six, and I guess I got so used to doing this that it never really crossed my mind that there will come a point when he needs to go into the Men’s Room alone. My family went out for dinner a few months ago, and when I got up to use the restroom my son said he had to go as well, so we trotted off together to the ladies room. When we got back my husband immediately said, “You can’t do that anymore! He is way too old to be in there with you!” For the first time I had to stop and think, “How old is too old?” Read More

Starting A Recipe Exchange Club

It is inevitable that most families fall into a rut with the meals they eat. Lots of things contribute to this situation with the major reason being lack of time to plan out new menus, shop for the necessary ingredients and prepare the meal. As a result, whoever does the cooking for the family, often relies on his/her tried & true recipes that can be assembled with a minimal amount of time and effort. Yet many of us enjoy eating out because it provides the opportunity to try new and different dishes and/or eat meals that we do not enjoy making at home. Read More
What do you pay your babysitter?
By Rachel Hoeing
My husband and I absolutely loathe the thought of paying a sitter. We love our date nights and know they are sometimes necessary in order to get quality adult time, but the cost of a night out can add up quickly! Then there are those of us who also need sitters or nannies during the day in order to work, run errands, hit the doctor, etc. I think it is important to talk to other moms about what you pay your sitters, so that you are not the mom who is underpaying or even overpaying!
Here are some rates below that we think can serve as a generic rule for paying a sitter. I think these rates are very fair. I also base payment on whether or not the sitter can drive. If I have to pick up the babysitter and/or take her home, I usually pay a little less than if she can drive herself. Read More

By Rachel Hoeing
I have personally never been one to care about cars. Sad, but true. I have no idea what types of cars my friends drive, only the color. Seriously, I know my mom has a red car, but that’s it. Maybe it’s a Saturn, no a Camry. Who cares? Maybe I inherited this gene from my Nana Hess. She never even had a driver’s license in her 88 years of life. Read More
I'd Rather Stick Pins in my Eyeballs
By Rachel Hoeing
One day when I asked my daughter to do something that she wasn’t too crazy about doing, she looked at me and replied with a bit of sass, “I’d Rather Stick Pins in My Eyeballs.” You might be thinking. “Oh, she is going through the teenager attitude phase right?” No, the girl is FOUR! I couldn’t believe when that came out of her mouth! Initially, it struck me as funny and I could not help but laugh. Then I asked her where she had heard that and she replied, “High School Musical.” I know what you are thinking – “It is HIGH SCHOOL musical, Rachel, not PRESCHOOL musical, of course she is going to hear things like that and mimic what they do.” Read More

Why I Got Involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters
By Guest Blogger Anitra Mitchell
I asked Anitra to write this blog about her experiences with Big Brothers/Big Sisters after Rachel H and I were invited to a BB/BS luncheon. I knew little about BB/BS at the time, and was amazed to learn so much about this wonderful organization, the parents who give so much of their time and love, and all the incredible "little brothers and sisters." I also had no idea Anitra and her family were involved as "Bigs" before attending this luncheon and discovering her husband is the president of the local BB/BS chapter. Anitra and her husband, Brad, have two beautiful boys: Cooper (age 5) and Turner (age one), and one amazing "little brother" Steven. I hope you enjoy their story. - KM Read More
Our Favorite Picks for Cool Summer Reads
By Katie Moosbrugger
Every so often we’ll run a blog that has nothing to do with parental responsibilities! And today’s blog is a collaboration of books that we highly recommend for your reading list this summer! One of my most favorite "mommy-time" activities is reading on the beach. I always pack a book in my beach bag in the hopes of sneaking in a few pages. But...I rarely get to enjoy such indulgences when I'm on the beach with my kids, let alone sit in a beach chair! Read More
Scandals, Sports, Scores & Schedules
By Katie Moosbrugger
In my house growing up, if you weren’t playing a sport full-time then you were watching and cheering one either on TV or on the side-lines. We were a pretty athletic family – and I guess a little competitive too – but it was the basis of my upbringing. I couldn’t have imagined it any other way. Sure we tried our hand at being well-rounded in other ways, such as learning an instrument or running for student office. But it was playing sports that ultimately taught me a lot of life lessons that I still fall back on today.
And with the all the recent talk about Tiger Woods– and all the playground chatter about who’s child is playing what sport – I thought I’d dedicate today’s post to some random ponderings related to scandals, sports, scores and scheduling. But I’m just tossing out some thoughts and am hoping you’ll catch on and play the comment game at the end of this blog! Read More
OMG – He is Talking about ME!
By Rachel Hoeing
So the other week I was watching Big Brother (yes, Big Brother – don’t hate, don’t judge) and one of my favorite players was talking to the camera in the Diary Room. Ragan is his name and he is hilarious! Anyway, he was talking about an event that happened in the Big Brother House and exclaimed, “I was crying like a 40-year-old woman watching Oprah!” I started laughing and then suddenly stopped. Silence. Holy cow. He is talking about ME! I am the 40-year-old woman who cries watching Oprah! Read More
Memories, Sweet Memories
By Rachel Hoeing
I consider myself a pretty nostalgic person. When we visit my parents, I can spend hours looking through old photos, reading old report cards, and browsing through my old sticker collections. I want my children to also enjoy reminiscing on their childhood. I want them to ask questions about their heritage and their relatives who passed on before they got to know them.
I have many ways that I try to create and save memories, but am always looking for more. Here are a few ideas I wanted to share today, and I would love for you to include comments at the end of this blog to give all of us more ideas on how to preserve memories for our children! Read More
Let's Get Ready to Rumble!
By Rachel Hoeing
“Get Offa Me!”
“Stoooooooop it!”
“She’s touching me!”
“He’s bothering me!”
“That’s mine!”
If you are familiar with these phrases, thank goodness because that means I am not alone. If you are not familiar with these phrases, then it means your kids don’t fight and I need you to please offer me some suggestions today!
My children fight like cats and dogs. I have one boy, almost seven, and one girl, almost five. They have fought like this from the moment my daughter could reach out and take things from my son. It is pretty much all day, every day when they are together. Spring Break gave me a reminder of what the summer would entail – long hot days with sweaty, whiny kids, who are hanging on me and fighting with each other. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Read More
Spacebook, Myface, Facebook ...
By Rachel Hoeing
No matter what you call it, Facebook has seemed to take over the Internet the past two years with adults. What used to be a pastime for college kids has now turned into an addiction for many parents and even grandparents. The non-Facebookers out there will love today’s post as I poke fun at the many nuances of it. But alas, I must admit, I like it. I really do.
Facebook does have many pros, like how cool is it that you can look on someone’s FB page to remind you of the name of their husband and kids so that you don’t look like a fool when you see them at that cookout this weekend? Or that you can look up a friend’s birthday that you should know after being friends with her for ten years, but totally forgot to write it on your calendar this year! Read More
Things I Learned the Hard Way
By Rachel Hoeing
Life is funny. Experiences are funny. They are especially funny when they happen to someone else. Thought I’d let you enjoy some amusement today at my expense by reading things that I learned the hard way. And please share some of your own by commenting at the end!
-If you start to feel queasy, nauseous, or sick prior to getting on a plane … do not get on the plane. The pilot cannot take off when someone is stuck in the bathroom. You may just have to exit the plane with sheer embarrassment so the rest of the passengers can get on their way.
-Piggy backing on the above comment, always check the barf bags on the plane. Did you know that yours may have a hole in the bottom?
-When deciding to cliff dive on your honeymoon, make sure you learn the correct position in which to land. A shot in the rear from a Jamaican doctor is not a honeymoon dream.
-When you get a spider bite on your rear, the doctor does in fact need to see it before prescribing an antibiotic, even if he is your husband’s best friend. Read More
